Experience as Attorney for the Child.

Ciano’s experience includes serving as Attorney for the Child in a custody appeal before the Appellate Division, Third Department. This is a distinct role: the attorney represents the child, not either parent.

In custody proceedings, an Attorney for the Child provides independent legal advocacy, consults with the child in an age-appropriate manner, and explains the available options. New York’s rules generally require advocacy directed by the wishes of a child capable of considered judgment, subject to limited exceptions. The role is not simply to recommend what an adult believes is best for the child.

This work brings a child-focused perspective to Ciano’s family-law and appellate experience, with attention to the child’s voice, careful preparation, and the obligations of confidential representation. We do not identify children, publish their communications, or describe their private circumstances here.
